5 Ways to Get Ready for 2021

Buh-bye 2020 and hellooo 2021! We love that fresh New Year smell where anything feels possible. January is a great time to reflect, reset, and plan for the upcoming year. Here are five ways to get ready for 2021 so you can crush your goals, whether you want to get more organized, learn a new skill, grow your business, or set wellness habits.

Tips for the New Year to Reach Your Goals

New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap, but one of the reasons why many people give them up by the time February rolls around is because their resolutions are too general and they don’t have a strategy. With these five tips, you’ll be much more likely to follow through and reach your goals.

1. Reflect on the previous year.

Take some quiet time to reflect on your previous year’s goals. Think about your successes, failures, what worked, and what didn’t work. We recommend doing a “brain dump” in a notebook which is writing all the content in your mind to help declutter your mind. If you need more structure, you can also search online for reflection question prompts like this list from Lifehack.

2. Set SMART goals.

When writing your goals for 2021, it’s important that you make them “SMART” - which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. A goal that’s too broad will be harder to achieve whereas a SMART goal will help you clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, and use your time and resources productively. This will increase your chances of successfully achieving your goal.

3. Create a “why” statement.

A “why” statement describes the purpose behind the goal you want to achieve. When we’re clear on our purpose, we’re less likely to lose motivation. For example, if your goal is to get fit, your “why” statement can be something like “My why for getting in better shape is to have more energy to play with my kids.”

4. Make a plan with actionable steps.

Armed with your SMART goal and “why” statement, next you’ll need to make a strategy to achieve it. Your plan should contain the steps you need to take (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly) and the reason why they should be taken. When you’ve finished making your plan, put it somewhere you can see it every day, like your desk area, to help you stay focused and track progress.

5. Get an accountability partner or group.

According to research from The American Society of Training and Development, having scheduled accountability with someone increases the probability of completing a goal by 95 percent - more than any other action. An accountability partner or group is beneficial for several reasons as they can offer encouragement and support, provide constructive feedback, and share knowledge and resources.

Make 2021 the Best Year Yet!

Even if you don’t have the greatest track record with New Year’s resolutions, these tips should help you get ready for 2021 and make it a great year. We’re not saying that it’ll be easy, but when you get clear on your goal, find your “why,” create a plan, and have accountability, there’s nothing that will be able to stop you from achieving success.
